In Module 4 the principles and purposes of assessment of beginning literacy are discussed. Both group assessment and assessment of individual learners are described. An assessment tool for teachers to be able to identify learners who are experiencing difficulties in learning to read, is presented.

Module 3 reiterates the importance of language learning in literacy development. It focuses on how to plan lessons using explicit instruction to develop grammar, phonological and phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge, decoding, reading comprehension, and writing, as well as a positive attitude towards language, literacy, and literature.

Module 2 focuses on the use of literature in the K-3 classroom. It discusses the benefits of using children's literature and considerations in choosing literature for use in the K-3 classroom.
